The nation’s quarry organisation has announced the appointment of Wayne Scott as the new Chief Executive of the Aggregate and Quarry Association. AQA chair Jared Johnston says the AQA Board at its meeting today confirmed Wayne Scott to take on the role from October 1 2018.
“As the current CEO of the mining/extractive industries health and safety organisation, MinEx, Wayne is very well known and respected in the quarry sector.
“In fact, we have chosen to appoint Wayne as AQA’s new CE from a field of outstanding candidates on the basis that he will continue to also be CEO of MInEx.
“This reflects both Wayne’s outstanding qualities and the Board’s view that this dual role can serve the interests of both the AQA and MinEx. There are also considerable efficiency gains to be had from combining forces, providing real value to our membership.
“Wayne will continue to be based at the Wellington offices of the minerals industry organisation, Straterra and will be looking to the appointment of a capable person to take up some of his current duties with MinEx. Straterra will provide increased office support to both AQA and MinEx. Wayne will be operating independently on policy and planning issues and will report to the AQA Board on delivery of AQA’s Business Plan.
“The AQA is fortunate to be able to work with MinEx and Straterra to achieve this outcome, to remain independent but to benefit from the experience and capability in
those organizations.”
Jared Johnston says this will mean Wayne Scott can continue to provide oversight to the huge range of important work on health and safety he has developed in his 15
months at MinEx, while allowing him to devote significant time to the AQA.
“We believe Wayne was the best candidate for the role and have been prepared to work with him and the MinEx board to bring together arrangements that will see both organisations benefit.”
“While Wayne will continue to work with quarries on improving their health and safety, he will also provide a new focus for the AQA in engaging with industry, as well as with Government, councils and communities.
“We want to develop a much better understanding of the critical role that quarries contribute to our nation’s development and Wayne has already shown he can provide such leadership.”
Wayne Scott, who replaces Roger Parton who is retiring after 12 years as AQA CE, says he is delighted to be able to take up the role.
“I am totally committed to the extractive sector and this new role allows me to extend beyond health and safety into all the other challenges that our quarry industry faces.
“I look forward to being able to extend my week by week contact with quarries as well as pursuing some of the regulatory and policy issues that prevent us from achieving some of the outcomes and recognition we deserve.”
Jared Johnston paid tribute to Roger Parton’s long service to the AQA.
“Roger has served our Board and industry with cheerful efficiency and dedication and we recognised that by awarding him Life Membership of the AQA at our annual conference in July. We wish him well as he reduces his work commitments.”
Chris Baker, chair of MinEx says he believes the new appointment is a win/win for MinEx and for the AQA.
“Wayne will be getting extra support to allow the excellent work he’s been doing on health and safety to continue, as well as providing strong new leadership for the quarry sector.
“There are some big challenges ahead for the extractive sector and combining our resources will give us better prospects for the progress we want on all fronts.”
